dish garden

I made this easy dish garden using a big glass serving plate and a cake cover
the soil is cactus mix with a layer of sand on the top

I give it a little drizzle of water about every 10 days
the glass dome makes it quite humid
I originally had just succulents in it, but I've recently added mosses and lichens

they seem to be very happy
living up here in the Northwest, moss and lichen are abundant
... all of these pieces I found while out walking ...

Very nice. I love things like that. Great reuse idea and pretty too. I tried it in a large jar that I have that has a lid, but didn't have any luck. May try it again.

Yes yes--every year in New England we gathered club moss, lichen, ferns, tiny red berry bush cuttings and tiny starter trees for glass gardens to overwinter with. Sometimes stones and stone sculptures to form a fairy scene. Lovely tradition. You only need a sunlit window, some glass container that has a breathing option (ie-loose top).

The mosses and luchens make it look like dinosaurs should be arriving any minute. So pretty, love this idea. Might have to be on the lookout for a thrift cake stand and cover! xox Corrine

I love it! I want one too - I like Dosfishes idea of finding a cake stand at a thrift store, if I ever see one I'll know what to do with it.

I fell in love with this as soon as I saw it. Of course, to replicate it here in the mid-west, I would have to pay about $30 or more for the same plants you got FREE!! Way to go!

This is great! I was just planning out a little windowsill shallow garden for hens-and-chicks and sedums in general. Love your idea!

I used to have one of these that lasted for years. Then one day I noticed that it had a few bugs and I dumped the whole thing. I even used to sell them to people that I worked with. It was fun picking out all the tiny things to put inside. Did you even find the succulents on your walks or did you purchase them? I collect that grey-colored moss along my walks and have a dish full of it outside. I love it when it dries out in summer but it also looks so great the rest of the year too and especially wonderful when it is in big clumps on a branch that has fallen. Nice Kim!
